Collaborative Institutions


The Head Office maintains a workable liaison and collaboration with international agencies such as ICID, ECO, World Bank, EEC and other regional agencies e.g. INWRLiAM. Under ICID, the Council heads three subject committees of the National Commission on Irrigation, Water Resources System Analysis, and Irrigation & Drainage Research, The Council also acts as the Secretariat of the National Committee on IHP and focal point for IHP - HKH Friend Project.

The Chairman of Council is the Chairman of the Expert Group of Groundwater under the auspicious of Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO),

World Bank

The Council maintains its contacts with the World Bank Experts on water and agriculture. It is administrating one of the components of the project of World Bank: “Agriculture Research Project-Il” whereby it has to coordinate 8& implement research studies on irrigation, water quality and environment. The Council succeeded in organizing a workshop on “Pakistan Irrigation & Drainage Options and Issues” whereby it gathered almost all experts from various water related agencies. Important issues were discussed and the recommendations were made to set a direction for future policies.


International Commission on Irrigation & Drainage (ICID)

The ICID is a non-governmental body dealing with irrigation and drainage problems. Technical activities of the commission are carried out by three technical committees and eleven working groups on various aspects of irrigation and drainage. These committees and working groups receive feed back from sixty four National Committees. Pakistan National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage (PANCID) is one of them. The Council is a regular member of PANCID. Chairman of PCRWR is an elected member of Committee on Research and Future Development. PCRWR also maintains liaison with national research and development agencies like WAPDA, PARC, Provincial Irrigation Departments, and Ministry of Water and Power.

Inter-Islamic Network on Water Resources Development and Management
(INWRDAM)

PCRWR is the focal point for the network of inter-Islamic water resources development and management. The objects of INWRDAM include initiating joint projects of research and development, and helping member states in the training of quality manpower and rendering consultancy and adviser services for water development and management. INWRDAM member states at present are composed of eight countries i.e Bangladesh, Egypt, Jordan, Mali, Niger, Pakistan, Tunis and Turkey. As INWRDAM is a professional platform to the Islamic Countries for exchange of information, knowledge and expertise in water sector hence the member states of the network try to coordinate and collaborate in such activities which can ensure proper planning of water resources, development, effective management, proper utilization and conservation of water resources as required for future economic growth in Islamic countries. Pakistan became its member in 1993 and in collaboration with INWRDAM. PCRWR has conducted International workshops in the year 1998 and 2001 in which Water Resources Experts from different Islamic countries participated.

International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD)

Established in 1983, ICIMOD aims to promote sustainable development in the Hindu KushHimalayan Ranges of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan. With a multidisciplinary staff of professionals, ICIMOD is a focal point for documentation and information, training and applied research, and demonstration on a wide range of issues that the governments and peoples of this 3,500 km mountain rage face. Most activities are carried out by or through collaborating institutions and organizations in its member countries, with ICIMOD providing for a regional perspective and exchange of information and experience.

ICIMOD is the first and, so far, only international centre devoted to integrated mountain development. It was established out of widespread recognition of the environmental degradation of mountain habitats and the increasing impoverishment of mountain communities in the Hindu Kush-Himalayas and based upon an agreement between His Majesty’s Government of Nepal and UNESCO.

PCRWR is collaborating actively with ICIMOD in regard to its professional activities such as training courses, seminars and meetings of the executives.

Department for International Development (DFID)

DFID is an International organization that helps developing countries in the development
of agriculture and poverty alleviation programmes. PCRWR is collaborating with DFID and recently a proposal on “the use of low quality groundwater in the Irrigated Agriculture. In Indus Basin” has been submitted for getting technical and financial assistance.

United Nations University (UNU)

The PCRWR is establishing organic testing facilities at its National Water Quality Laboratory (NWQL) in collaboration with UNU.

UNICEF

UNICEF and PCRWR have been collaborating with each other, in the research programmes of drinking water quality assessment and management. Under a similar research collaboration programme, the PCRWR has developed, tested and successfully installed low cost chlorinators for water treatment in Faisalabad and Rahimyar Khan.
