Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) has established three Groundwater
Investigations Cells, one at Headquarter, Islamabad an other at Regional Research Centre,
Lahore and third at Water Resources Research Centre Peshawar. The Centres are working in
development project of groundwater exploration and providing technical assistance to the
public and private sector for in location of tube wells for water supply and irrigation
throughout the country. The brief of activities of these centers are given below:

sustainable groundwater management.(Phase-1)”

Groundwater is contributing about 40 percent in total groundwater resources of the country.
Its demand is increasing at high rate due to shortage of surface water supplies. The increasing
pressure on groundwater is cussing declining in water table in many areas of the country.
Sustainability of groundwater requires complete resource estimation and effective management
techniques. The project is formulated for estimation and mapping of groundwater resources of
the country. Groundwater is mostly confined to Indus Plain which is huge and spreading over
three provinces, Punja, Sindh, an NWFP. First phase of PC-1 is prepared for Upper Indus Plain
comprising of mainly four Doabs; Thal, Bari, Rechna and Chaj. The filed investigation included
electrical resistivity survey, exploratory well drilling, water quality and litho-logical
sampling and laboratory analysis. Filed work is completed in 80 % of the project area and
final reports are under preparation. The fonal draft of Thal Doab is prepared whereas the
reports of remaining areas are under process. The groundwater quality in all these areas has
been divided into four classes; fresh, marginal, brackish and saline. The classification is
applied for groundwater water quality in six depth sections: 0-59, 50-100, 100 -150, 150-200,
200,-250 and 250-300 meters. In this way the final output of he project will be water quality
maps and estimation of total fresh m marginal, brackish and saline water in upper Indus Plain.
