Water Resources Research Centre, Peshawar

Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) was re-established at Peshawar in 2003 with the objective to address the water related problems of NWFP and Northern Areas, which are known as base of Indus Basin irrigation System (IBS). Even being the hydrological origin of IBS, only limited water resources are at the disposal of these areas, due to their peculiar geographical and topographical location. Therefore there is dire need to accelerate the pace of research for management and efficient utilization of limited water resources of these areas. WRRC Peshawar is conducting research on assessment, development, management of water resources, irrigated agriculture problems and water related issues of NWFP and Northern Areas. It plays the role to initiate problem oriented research activities in different disciplines of water sector with a view to enhance water use efficiency and water productivity.

Facilities Available

  • Water Quality Laboratory
  • A water quality laboratory has been established in the Centre to conduct water quality analysis (for drinking and irrigation purposes). The laboratory is adequately equipped with latest water quality testing instruments/equipment and qualified/ trained staff is available to carry out the analysis work. The laboratory has the capability to carry out the analysis of following water quality parameters(drinking, irrigation and waste water)Alkalinity, Aluminum, Antimony, Ammonia, Arsenic, Barium, Bicarbonate, Boron, Cadmium, Calcium, Carbonate, COD, Copper, Chloride, Chromium, Cobalt, Colour, Conductivity, DO, Fluoride, Free CO2, Free Chlorine, Hardness, Iodide, Iron, Lead, Lithium, Manganese, Magnesium, Mercury, Nickel, Nitrate (N), Nitrite (as NO2), Odour, pH, Phosphorus, Phosphate, Potassium, Selenium, Silicon, Silver, Sodium, Strontium, Sulphate, Suspended Solids, Taste, Tin, Total Chlorine, TDS, TSS, Turbidity, Zinc, Coliform and E. Coli.

  • Field Research Station/Lysimeter Station
  • A piece of land (12 acres) has been acquired for establishing a lysimeter station and meteorological observatory. Soon after the completion of civil work, the field research and dissemination activities related to i.e.. soil-water-plant relationship, irrigation scheduling, nitrate leaching, groundwater contribution and agro-meteorological data collection will be started.

  • Sub Station at Gilgit
  • A field research sub-station has been established at Gilgit to provide logistic support to the research and development activities being carried out under the administrative control of WRRC Peshawer i.e.. improved water conservation practices, testing methodologies for rejuvenation of glaciers, monitoring the behaviour of selected glaciers (mass accumulation or ablation estimates, advancement or recession etc.), snowmelt-stream flow relationships etc
